Getting started
Grimoire meaning, structure and study
A grimoire is a book of magical knowledge or practices. Historical documents, modern compilations and personal notebooks can all receive the name. The setting in which a book was produced matters as much as its cover title.

Context and method
A historical grimoire may combine prayers, diagrams, names, recipes and instructions. Modern editions can rearrange or translate the material. Identify the editor’s source so that contemporary commentary is not mistaken for part of the document.
How to study and use it
To begin a personal grimoire, record the date, purpose, consulted sources and observations. Separate quotation from your own commentary. Keep a thematic index and preserve edition details for referenced works.
Important distinctions
Grimoire and Book of Shadows overlap in some contemporary uses but are not equivalent in every setting. Choose a structure that distinguishes reference material, study plans and experience records.
