White magic and black magic: meanings and context

“White magic” and “black magic” are classifications used with different criteria by writers and communities. They may concern intention, morality, religion or social position. They do not form one universal technical division of magical practices.

Context and method

Ask who uses the classification and whom they describe. A term may be a self-description, an opponent’s judgement or a fictional convention. These uses should be distinguished in historical analysis.

How to study and use it

Compare two sources and record their criteria: purpose, procedure, relationship with deities and moral evaluation. Explain differences through the texts rather than assigning one characteristic to entire religions.

Important distinctions

A candle’s colour or a symbol’s appearance does not automatically classify a practice. Identify its tradition, author and stated purpose. The glossary helps establish vocabulary before comparing systems.
