Hermeticism: texts, principles and traditions

Hermeticism includes texts and traditions associated with Hermes Trismegistus. Philosophy, religion and magic appear in different parts of this field. A useful starting point distinguishes ancient texts from later interpretations and systems.

Context and method

The Corpus Hermeticum, Emerald Tablet and The Kybalion are neither one work nor documents from one period. The Kybalion’s familiar seven principles should be studied as that book’s proposal, not as an automatic summary of all Hermetic traditions.

How to study and use it

Choose a text, identify the edition and translation, then read a passage closely. Note how the writer describes mind, world and knowledge. Compare historical commentary afterward without replacing the source with its summary.

Important distinctions

Hermeticism and Gnosticism can be compared but are not equivalent names. Shared symbols or expressions do not establish identical traditions. The library and glossary support a more precise comparison.
