Context and method

A metal symbol, an operational diagram and an illustrated allegory are different kinds of documents. Identify the writer, language, edition and purpose. Terms such as mercury may carry distinct material and symbolic meanings.

How to study and use it

When studying an image, transcribe its caption and describe visible elements before interpreting them. Compare the text in the same edition. For figures such as Basil Valentine, distinguish traditional attribution from documented publication history.

Important distinctions

A metaphor of personal transformation does not demonstrate a chemical process. Historical study does not require reenacting old experiments. Use the library to compare sources and the glossary to track changes in vocabulary.
