Book of Shadows template: sources, practice and review pages

A personal Book of Shadows template can organise sources, chosen practices and observations without claiming to reproduce an initiatory text. Decide its purpose first. A reading notebook, a devotional record and a lineage document do not automatically share the same authority or audience.
Create sections with a purpose
Use a source index, dated study notes, practice records and a review section. Keep original quotations identifiable and brief; write your own summaries beside them. A clear structure makes it easier to locate an idea and check where it came from.
Distinguish inherited material from your work
Mark each item as a source summary, a proposed adaptation or your observation. Valiente’s Witchcraft for Tomorrow includes her proposed Book of Shadows, but that does not authenticate every template as a lineage text. Personal additions should be credited to their actual author.
Make revision visible
Give entries dates and preserve the question that prompted a change. Record conditions and observations separately from explanations. A private note can remain private: you do not need to publish personal experiences or material you are not authorised to share in order to maintain a useful notebook.
Reusable entry
- Date and question.
- Source, edition and page or section.
- Your summary and any chosen adaptation.
- What you actually did or observed.
- Review date and remaining questions.
Frequently asked questions
Must the notebook follow one universal order?
No. Choose an order suited to its declared purpose.
Does a template establish initiation?
No. A personal layout does not prove lineage or transmission.
Can I revise an entry?
Yes. Keep the date and reason for the revision clear.
